Welcome to Anna's Riding Stables. We are a small stable based in the tropical forest region of Bambi Mpapa, in the central southeast of Zanzibar — an area known for its fertile soil, spice farms and fruit trees, dotted with small rural villages.
We are about 30 minutes from the East Coast hotels, 45 minutes from Stone Town, and around 60 minutes from Nungwi and Kendwa in the north.
The stables were created by Anna Van Den Berg, who founded Zanzibar Animals Affection Society, the island's most important animal welfare charity. With over 40 years of experience, you couldn't be in better hands.

Riding lessons
With over 40 years of experience, Anna will teach you about horses and how to ride. Her lessons are informative and enjoyable — you will learn on one of Anna's calm and safe horses.

Forest rides
Join us as we trek into the local forests. The longer you ride, the deeper we go — past tropical plantations, remote villages and rural communities. A chance to canter is offered on our 90-minute rides. 45- and 60-minute rides are walk-and-trot only.

Our charity
ZAASO — twenty years of caring for Zanzibar's animals.
Zaaso is the oldest and most famous animal charity on the island, created some 20 years ago by an amazing Dutch lady, Anna Van Den Berg — who can still be seen today running around the island rescuing and treating animals.
Over the past 20 years, they have rescued well over 2,000 cats and dogs and more than 100 donkeys, to name just a few. Dr. Flavi, our stable vet, spent his early years working with Zaaso and still spends much of his time supporting the team.
